Taiwan Conducts Han Kuang Drills to Deter Chinese Invasion

The Government of the Republic of China launched the 42nd annual Han Kuang military and civil defense exercises from August 5 to 14, 2026, to rehearse defenses against a potential invasion by China. The 10-day drills involved over 20,000 troops and 5,000 reservists, shifting from choreographed scenarios to unscripted, live-fire exercises to test real-time command flexibility. Key operations included anti-airdrop drills at Taipei's Songshan Airport, runway repair at Hsinchu Air Base, and the first-ever joint anti-blockade operation between the navy and coast guard.

Central to the strategy is the development of a "hellscape" defense, inspired by Ukraine, which utilizes waves of drones and unmanned attack boats to overwhelm amphibious forces. President Lai Ching-te observed the deployment of locally produced medium-class suicide drones and announced a goal to produce 100,000 drones per month by 2030. To support this, the military established a Littoral Combat Command and integrated 3D-printing for battlefield resupply.

For the first time, the government tested societal resilience by deliberately throttling mobile internet speeds in cities including Taipei, Taichung, and Hsinchu to simulate cyber warfare and communications disruptions. These exercises occurred amid intensifying pressure from the People's Liberation Army, which maintained a daily presence of aircraft and warships around the island. While Taiwan's parliament approved a $24.8 billion budget for U.S. arms, President Donald Trump has characterized a pending $14 billion arms package as a "good negotiating chip" with Beijing.
