Student Protests and Police Violence Destabilize France

Thousands of students are blockading schools and marching across France to protest education austerity and police brutality as President Emmanuel Macron's term nears its end.

Nationwide unrest has erupted across France as more than 450,000 students blockaded schools and marched through major cities to protest deteriorating education infrastructure, staffing shortages, and government austerity. The movement, which began in September 2026, has seen over 500 schools blockaded and approximately 8,000 arrests, most of whom are minors. Protesters criticize Emmanuel Macron for utilizing Article 49.3 of the Constitution to bypass parliament and for cutting 54 billion from the budget while increasing military spending.

The government response has sparked outrage following reports of life-changing injuries, including a 15-year-old who lost a hand and a 16-year-old who was partially blinded. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that security forces used crowd-control weapons 18,000 times, though he subsequently suspended the use of launcher-fired grenades against students. Simultaneously, the Alliance police union filed a legal complaint against the state, alleging that officers are poorly equipped and receive contradictory orders.

Political tensions have intensified as Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu accused the hard-left party France Insoumise and candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon of manipulating student frustration for electoral gain ahead of next year's presidential election. The unrest coincides with the final months of Macron's term, which ends in May, and reflects a broader pattern of hostility following previous protests over retirement age increases and environmental disputes in Sainte-Soline.
