Gina Hinojosa Sues Greg Abbott Over Elon Musk Emails
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa sued Governor Greg Abbott to obtain unredacted emails regarding Elon Musk's business interests and political contributions in Texas.
Texas State Representative and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa filed a lawsuit in Travis County District Court on October 19 against Governor Greg Abbott to obtain unredacted emails between the governor's office and Elon Musk. The legal action follows a September 29 public information request for records concerning Musk's business interests, state grants, and economic incentives provided to SpaceX. Hinojosa alleges that Abbott violated the Texas Public Information Act and Section 552.008 of the Texas Government Code by providing 1,374 pages of records that were heavily redacted, with her campaign claiming only 200 pages remained legible.
Hinojosa argues that transparency is necessary given Musk's significant political contributions and discussions regarding a possible sale of Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX. She characterized the lack of transparency as "in-your-face corruption" and asserted that the governor is doing the bidding of moneyed interests instead of the people of Texas.
Governor Greg Abbott's office dismissed the lawsuit as a "political stunt" and an "act of desperation," claiming Hinojosa is abusing her official capacity for political gain. The governor's office maintains that the redactions are protected by privacy laws, attorney-client privilege, and commercial interests. The legal battle coincides with the start of early voting for the November 3 general election, where polling shows Abbott leading Hinojosa 52% to 48%.
