Tankers Attacked Near Hormuz as Iran Targets Kuwait

Two tankers reported attacks near the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman on August 1, 2026. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, one vessel was struck by an unknown projectile 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, which damaged its engine room and left the ship inoperative. A second tanker captain reported an explosion and a large splash 21 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, though that vessel sustained no damage. No casualties or environmental impacts were reported.

Simultaneously, the Kuwaiti army intercepted Iranian drones that targeted a government facility in northern Kuwait and civilian property on Bubiyan Island. While the military destroyed several drones, some reached their targets and caused material damage.

These incidents occur amid heightened conflict between the United States and Iran, characterized by U.S. strikes on Iranian Revolutionary Guard facilities and retaliatory Iranian strikes on U.S. bases. Donald Trump has threatened to hit Iran very hard in response to the escalation. United States Central Command rejected claims that Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, noting that thousands of ships have continued to sail through the waterway over the last four months.
