Democrats Win Landslide Victory in U.S. Midterm Elections

The Democratic Party seized control of the House and Senate and won 28 governorships, dealing a major electoral blow to President Donald Trump.

The Democratic Party won a landslide victory in the United States midterm elections, seizing the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate for the first time since 2023. The party secured 252 House seats to the Republicans' 162 and 54 Senate seats to 44, though final results from Alaska and Mississippi remain pending. The Democrats also won 28 governorships, including a historic victory in Texas where progressive Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott.

These results give Democrats control of all four border states, a shift that hinders President Donald Trump's plan to build a separation wall along the Mexican border. Other key victories included the reelection of Governor Tina Kotek in Oregon and Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in Washington's 3rd Congressional District.

The Republican Party suffered significant losses, including the failure of Turning Point USA to establish a "red wall" in Arizona, Nevada, and New Hampshire. Allies of Turning Point USA attributed the blowout to a national political climate shaped by President Trump's unpopular war with Iran. In response to the electoral losses, President Trump appointed hardline adviser Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff.
