Denmark Extends Military Conscription and Deploys Recruits to Greenland

Approximately 1,600 recruits began an extended 11-month military service period on Monday, August 4, 2026, as the Government of Denmark accelerates its national defense build-up. This overhaul, decided in 2024, nearly triples the standard service duration from four months and integrates women into the force for the first time, with women comprising roughly 20 percent of this year's intake. The program consists of five months of basic training followed by six months of operational service. Denmark aims to increase the annual number of conscripts to 7,500 by 2033.

The military expansion is a response to the security environment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and rising Arctic tensions. New training tracks now include specialized roles, such as a drone platoon within the Special Operations Command. Notably, Princess Isabella joined the Guard Hussar Regiment as a conscript, waiving her salary and allowance.

In late August, Denmark will deploy a company of more than 100 conscripts from the Schleswig Infantry to Greenland for a one-month rotation. This marks the first time conscripts will assume operational tasks in the territory, replacing professional troops. The deployment occurs as Denmark and the Government of Greenland continue to reject repeated attempts by U.S. President Donald Trump to annex the semi-autonomous territory for national security reasons.
