Trump Suspends Russia Sanctions to Lower High Diesel Prices

President Donald Trump suspended sanctions on Russia and agreed to purchase Russian diesel to combat soaring fuel costs ahead of the November midterm elections.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending a new sanctions package against Russia and announced the United States would purchase Russian diesel to lower fuel costs. The move comes as national diesel prices hit an average of $6.31 per gallon, with some states like California reaching $8.49, driven by an ongoing war with Iran. To further mitigate costs, the administration provided relief from federal highway excise tax penalties for drivers using dyed diesel.

These economic pressures coincide with dwindling fuel reserves, as distillate inventories have dropped 12 percent year-over-year. The fuel crisis has created significant political volatility for the Republican Party two weeks before the November midterm elections. Gas prices have risen 37 percent since Trump took office, leading to voter frustration over the cost of living.

Republican leaders are facing intense scrutiny during campaign stops in Nevada, North Carolina, and Virginia. While some officials attribute the surge to Democratic energy policies and the conflict with Iran, others acknowledge the severity of the crisis. Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton privately identified fuel costs as the primary driver of his campaign struggles, while House Majority Whip Tom Emmer described the current diesel prices as totally unacceptable.
