Texas Conservatives Pledge to Break Rank in Governor's Race

A movement of Texas conservatives using the slogan Break Rank is pledging to vote for Democratic candidates in the November elections. These voters cite dissatisfaction with the Republican Party's management of the economy, electricity, water, and data center projects as primary drivers for their shift.

Gina Hinojosa, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, is challenging Governor Greg Abbott for the governorship. Hinojosa has proposed a moratorium on data center projects and promised $1,500 payments to Texans from the state rainy day fund. While some reports indicate Hinojosa is within one point of Abbott, other polling and betting markets show her trailing by over four points, with some estimates giving Abbott an 80% to 90% chance of victory.

Governor Greg Abbott is seeking a record fourth term and maintains a significant financial advantage, holding tens of millions of dollars compared to Hinojosa's $3 million. Republican strategists believe Abbott's fundraising and aggressive campaigning will benefit down-ballot GOP candidates in Harris, Travis, and Dallas counties.

Concurrent with the gubernatorial race, the U.S. Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico is currently viewed as a toss-up. A Democratic victory in the governor's race would mark the first time a Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994.
