Norway Seizes Russian Vessel to Recover $4.22 Billion for Ukraine

Norwegian authorities seized the Professor Molchanov, a Russian state-owned research and cruise vessel, on September 2, 2026, while it was docked in Barentsburg, Svalbard. The action follows an August 31 order from the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court, which granted a request from Naftogaz, a Ukrainian state-owned energy group.

Naftogaz is seeking to enforce an international arbitration award of $4.22 billion plus interest and costs. The award stems from the expropriation of company assets following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea. The Professor Molchanov, operated by Roshydromet, serves as the primary passenger and cargo link between Murmansk and Barentsburg.

Russian officials have reacted sharply to the seizure. President Vladimir Putin previously described the seizure of Russian ships as "piracy and robbery," while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Russia would defend its interests "by all available means." Conversely, the Governor of Svalbard stated the seizure is a legal process to recover expropriated funds, and the Norwegian government maintains the matter is a private legal dispute between Naftogaz and Russia.

Sergii Fedorenko, acting CEO of Naftogaz, called the seizure another important step toward restoring justice and pledged that the company will continue to pursue Russian assets worldwide until the compensation is paid.
