John Swinney Urges Andy Burnham to Reverse Wind Factory Ban

First Minister John Swinney has formally urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to reconsider a UK Government block on a proposed wind turbine factory in Ardersier, Scotland. The facility, proposed by the Chinese firm Ming Yang, represents a £1.5 billion investment that could create 1,500 direct jobs and 8,000 supply chain roles. Swinney characterized the veto as an "anti-Scottish move," arguing that the UK Government accepts Chinese investment for the Hinkley power station in England.

The UK Government originally blocked the project in March 2026, citing national security and cyber security risks. Officials pointed to Ming Yang's potential links to the Chinese Communist Party and obligations to Chinese security services. A government spokesperson maintained that these risks remain despite Ming Yang approaching the current administration under new management.

UK Energy Security Minister Michael Shanks dismissed Swinney's request as "irresponsible," stating the First Minister is making a "political intervention" despite having received a high-level security briefing. Conservative shadow Scottish Secretary Andrew Bowie supported the ban, urging the Prime Minister to avoid reliance on "hostile regimes" and suggesting a return to North Sea drilling instead.

Scottish Energy Minister Stephen Gethins described the veto as a "massive blow," while Ming Yang UK Chief Executive Aman Wang expressed disappointment but stated the company respects the government's duty to protect national security.
