Hakeem Jeffries Campaigns to Become First Black House Speaker
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is campaigning in over 50 cities to regain House control and implement a 100-day oversight agenda against Donald Trump.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is campaigning in more than 50 cities across the United States to help Democrats regain majority control of the House of Representatives. If successful in the upcoming midterm elections, Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black American House speaker. He is currently conducting a final tour of key battleground districts, starting in the lower Hudson Valley, New York, to support combat veteran Cait Conley in her bid to unseat Republican Representative Mike Lawler.
Jeffries has developed a 100-day agenda focused on lowering the cost of living and conducting oversight of President Donald Trump's administration to "hold the crooks accountable." His campaign itinerary includes stops in competitive areas such as Virginia Beach, San Diego, Orange County, and Long Island, as well as Republican-leaning districts in San Antonio, Texas, and Omaha, Nebraska.
While Jeffries is recognized for a consensus-building leadership style, he faces internal pressure from a new generation of progressives and candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America who demand transformational change. He has previously challenged Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership by forcing votes on the Iran war and the Jeffrey Epstein files, and by leading a government shutdown over Affordable Care Act tax credits. The new Congress is scheduled to convene on January 3.
