Peter Obi Maintains 2023 Election Win Claims

Peter Obi asserts he was the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election and rejects calls to step down for the 2027 race.

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, stated in a BBC Africa interview that he maintains his belief that he was the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election. He acknowledged there is no evidence to prove this claim, which follows the Independent National Electoral Commission declaring Bola Tinubu the winner and the Supreme Court of Nigeria upholding that result after dismissing challenges from Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

Addressing economic policy, Obi argued that corruption is the primary issue with the fuel subsidy regime. He stated that if elected, he would retain the subsidy while focusing on removing the underlying corruption.

Looking toward the 2027 election, Obi rejected suggestions that he should step down in favor of a consensus opposition candidate. He asserted that opposition parties should instead prioritize mobilizing more voters to secure a victory.
