Russia Surges Jet-Powered Shahed Drone Attacks Against Ukraine

The Federal Government of Russia significantly increased its deployment of jet-powered Shahed loitering munitions against Ukraine throughout July and August. The Ukrainian air force reported a fivefold increase in these attacks in July compared to June. These advanced drones, known domestically as Gerans, utilize turbojets to reach speeds of 200 mph and altitudes of 30,000 feet, making them largely immune to the machine guns and interceptor quadcopters used against earlier propeller-driven models.

Drone expert Serhii Beskrestnov estimated that Russia launched over 2,500 jet-powered drones in August, following 1,500 launches in July. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that 800 of these drones were launched within a single four-day window. Ukraine also faces threats from the S8000 Banderol, a hybrid jet-powered weapon capable of speeds exceeding 400 mph.

In response to the evolving threat, Zelenskyy stated that four Ukrainian companies have developed new interceptor technology. Yuriy Ignat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian air force, noted that the increased speed and complexity of these weapons now require the use of aircraft and ground- and air-based air-defense assets.
