Satya Nadella Calls for AI Emergency Brake Controls
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella advocated for independent controls and emergency brakes for advanced AI systems to allow humans to shut down models mid-task.
Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella called for the implementation of an emergency brake and independent controls for advanced artificial intelligence systems. He argued that authorized humans must have the ability to pause or shut down models mid-task to ensure safety.
Nadella advocated for surrounding non-deterministic models with deterministic system design and reliable operating procedures. He suggested that frontier closed and open weight models should be treated as insider risks to build more trustworthy systems. These proposals align with safety warnings from other industry leaders, including Bill Gates and Sam Altman, and follow claims from an Anthropic researcher that AI safety is being neglected.
In contrast, President Donald Trump has dismissed the risk of AI-driven extinction. Trump is focusing on maintaining a competitive edge over China and has established a new AI Force, led by Jay Clayton, to facilitate the industry and identify bad actors.
