India Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Train in Haryana

The Government of India launched its first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, in the northern state of Haryana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the unveiling ceremony for the project, which is part of a national initiative to expand clean energy transportation and transition toward a carbon-free society.

The train utilizes fuel cell technology to generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in emissions of only water vapor instead of carbon dioxide. Developed through a collaboration between a government-affiliated company and a private manufacturer, the train is capable of carrying up to 2,600 passengers.

This rollout aligns with India's broader strategic push for green hydrogen produced via renewable sources, such as solar power. The government intends to use this technology to improve sustainable mobility on non-electrifiable rail routes.
