India Signals Openness to Renewed Economic Ties With China
India indicates a potential reopening of economic ties with China provided border stability is maintained and trade terms remain fair.
The Government of India is signaling a potential reopening of economic ties with China, contingent on stable geopolitical conditions and fair trade terms. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum that India remains open to business engagements with China, though he noted the process is ongoing and the final outcome has not yet been determined.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that peace and tranquility in border areas are essential prerequisites for normalizing bilateral relations. While he noted that border areas have settled to a great extent since 2024, he maintained that the boundary situation must remain stable for broader relations to progress.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that high-level diplomatic dialogues have continued over the past year. These interactions include a summit-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit.
