Trump Administration Ends Legal Protections for Afghan Allies

The Trump administration terminated Temporary Protected Status for Afghan nationals and rolled back resettlement programs, leaving thousands of U.S. allies vulnerable to deportation and Taliban retribution.

The Donald Trump administration has systematically dismantled legal protections and resettlement programs for Afghan nationals who assisted U.S. forces. Effective July 14, 2025, the government terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS), leaving more than 11,000 individuals subject to immediate detention and deportation. This move was accompanied by executive orders cutting funding for Afghan flights, pausing refugee admissions, and shutting down the State Department office responsible for relocation efforts.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has claimed Afghanistan is now safe for return, a position the White House maintains by asserting that conditions have improved. However, these claims are disputed by the State Department's own "Do Not Travel" advisory and reports from the United Nations. U.N. special rapporteur Richard Bennett reported that members of the former republic are being hunted, tortured, and killed despite a promised general amnesty.

Beyond TPS, the administration has targeted Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) recipients and green card holders with threats of deportation. A federal budget bill further restricted these immigrants by eliminating access to food and health care benefits. While Donald Trump stated he would "try to save" Afghans facing repatriation in the United Arab Emirates, critics and veterans argue the policy shifts betray those who risked their lives for the U.S. mission. In response, California has allocated $10 million for immigration legal services to support the large Afghan population in the state.
