Gavin Newsom Condemns Donald Trump's Remarks on Iran Threats
California Governor Gavin Newsom called President Donald Trump's comments about Iran's ability to target U.S. cities dangerous and ordered increased threat monitoring.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned remarks made by Donald Trump during a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, in which the president suggested that Iran could "take out" Los Angeles or San Diego. Newsom described the comments as "dangerous — if not treasonous," and directed the state's emergency preparedness center to monitor for threats in case foreign actors viewed the statements as an invitation to target California.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Republican House candidate Jim Desmond also criticized the president, stating that the commander in chief must protect all American citizens. White House communications director Steven Cheung dismissed the criticism as a "media freakout," arguing that Trump was explaining the risks that would have existed if a nuclear Iran had not been stopped.
In a separate announcement, Trump unveiled a new shipyard at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point. The project is funded by $3.7 billion from Anduril Industries and $2.9 billion from the United States Navy.
