Netanyahu Challenges Record Palestinian Election Gains With Security Crackdown
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli security forces launched a crackdown on Palestinian-led parties after they won a record 19 seats in certified elections.
Palestinian-led parties, including the Joint List and the United Arab List, won a record 19 seats in Israel's certified election results. Following the announcement, Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party alleged the results were the product of fraud and illegality, despite the Israeli election commission rejecting those claims.
This political dispute has triggered a security crackdown involving police raids, arbitrary arrests, and targeted interrogations of party activists and media personnel. The conflict extended to state institutions when Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara denied a request from Shin Bet Director David Zini to interrogate senior Palestinian lawmakers over allegations of foreign interference. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir responded by demanding the removal of the Attorney-General.
Palestinian leaders Ahmad Tibi and Mansour Abbas characterized the government's actions as a systematic campaign of intimidation. They argued the measures are designed to discredit the democratic process and neutralize their political influence as the next government forms.
