Narendra Modi Launches ₹13,000 Crore Projects in Chennai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to inaugurate infrastructure, maritime, and scientific projects valued at over ₹13,000 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai on Sunday, October 11, 2026, to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects totaling more than ₹13,000 crore. This visit marked the Prime Minister's first trip to the city since Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay took office, with the two leaders riding the newly inaugurated Porur–Poonamallee stretch of the Chennai Metro Phase II together. The ₹4,900-crore metro project features driverless signaling and a 3.7-km double-decker structure.
Infrastructure upgrades include ₹3,700 crore in highway projects, specifically sections of NH-744 and NH-744A, and over ₹750 crore in railway developments, including the Karaikal-Peralam line and five redeveloped Amrit Stations. Maritime expansions were launched at Chennai, V.O. Chidambaranar, and Kamarajar ports, while a ₹1,620-crore lubricant base stocks project was initiated at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited's Manali refinery.
In the scientific and cultural sectors, Modi dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He launched a global mission to map over 100 human brains into 3D cellular atlases and released the C-STROKE human ischaemic stroke atlas. His itinerary also included a visit to the Arulmigu Jalakandeswarar Temple, the inauguration of a music training centre associated with composer Ilaiyaraaja, and attendance at the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
