Israel Strikes Syrian Air Base Over Turkish Troop Deployment

Israel conducted eight airstrikes on Syria's Abu al-Duhur air base to deter Turkish military deployment, sparking condemnation from the United States, Syria, and Turkey.

Israel conducted eight airstrikes on Tuesday against the Abu al-Duhur military air base in northwestern Syria, damaging runways and hangars. Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation, stating that Syria breached a security status quo by permitting Turkish troops to deploy near Aleppo. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office claimed the strikes were necessary to deter Turkey from sending sophisticated weapons systems to the site and to protect Israeli security.

The Government of Syria and the Government of Türkiye both condemned the strikes as violations of sovereignty. Syria described the action as a dangerous escalation, while Turkey denied having any military presence at the base.

United States Special Envoy Tom Barrack condemned the attack as an unnecessary escalation. The Trump administration has supported the new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which Barrack noted has indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel. The incident highlights growing diplomatic fractures between the United States and Israel over regional security and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
