Donald Trump Proposes Run It Hot Economic Strategy
Donald Trump plans to implement a Run It Hot strategy using tariffs and Federal Reserve pressure to grow the United States out of national debt.
President Donald Trump intends to implement a "Run It Hot" economic strategy designed to grow the United States out of its national debt. The plan relies on three primary pillars: the implementation of significant tariffs by August 1 to increase customs revenue, a new tax bill proposed at the start of fiscal year 2026 that appears budget-neutral through tariff inflows, and pressure on the Federal Reserve System to lower front-end real rates.
To achieve these goals, the strategy includes appointing a highly dovish Federal Reserve chair. The objective is to maintain nominal growth between 4% and 5% by utilizing fiscal stimulus and sticky inflation.
Analysts suggest this approach differs from previous economic iterations due to the current environment of tariffs and challenges to the independence of the central bank. There are concerns that these policies may trigger a revolt in the long-end of the U.S. bond market.
