The Trump administration admitted in court filings that it canceled 284 federal clean energy grants, totaling between $7.5 billion and $7.6 billion, based solely on the political identity of the recipient states. The terminations targeted projects in 16 states that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and are represented by two Democratic-caucusing senators. The affected projects included methane leak reductions, hydrogen fuel hubs, and electrical grid upgrades in states such as California, Oregon, and Colorado.

Federal officials conceded the cuts were not based on statutory, programmatic, or cost-reduction factors. This admission contradicts previous public claims and congressional testimony from Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who maintained the decisions were not political. Court documents revealed that 340 other grants recommended for termination were spared because they were located in states that backed Donald Trump or had at least one Republican senator.

The revelations surfaced during a lawsuit filed by University of California researchers. Democratic lawmakers condemned the move as a weaponization of government and an abuse of power. Simultaneously, the administration is finalizing rules to give political appointees greater control over $1 trillion in annual federal grants to ensure spending aligns with presidential priorities.
