Ukraine Accelerates Jet Interceptor Drones to Counter Russian Attacks

Ukraine is developing high-speed interceptor drones to counter Russian jet-powered attack drones and cruise missiles amid critical jet engine shortages.

Ukraine is accelerating the production of high-speed interceptor drones to counter a new generation of Russian jet-powered attack drones and cruise missiles, including the Geran-4, Geran-5, and Banderol. These faster Russian assets have targeted Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure, with September data indicating that only 54% of jet-powered Geran drones were intercepted.

Volodymyr Zelensky reported that SpaceX's capping of Starlink connection speeds recently disabled some of these high-speed interceptors. To address vulnerabilities and reduce reliance on foreign supplies, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara has prioritized the domestic development of jet engines. This push follows efforts by China to curb jet engine sales to Ukraine, and approximately 20 Ukrainian companies are now working in the field.

Ukrainian firms such as Noctis and General Cherry, in coordination with the SBU, are currently testing prototypes to match Russian speeds. While the U.S.-based company Perennial Autonomy is testing an interceptor capable of 1,000 mph, Ukraine continues to face a critical shortage of jet engines as a primary hurdle to scaling its domestic defense capabilities.
