Trump Blames Vandals as Reflecting Pool Drained for Repairs
President Donald Trump ordered the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool drained to repair alleged vandalism and algae blooms following a troubled $16 million renovation project.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., was drained starting July 13, 2026, to address infrastructure failures and alleged criminal sabotage. This follows a fast-tracked, $16 million renovation spearheaded by Donald Trump to beautify the capital for the nation's 250th birthday. The project, which featured a new water-purification system and an American flag blue waterproof coating, was marred by algae blooms and peeling sealant shortly after its June reopening.
President Trump attributed the failures to vandals, claiming saboteurs used knives or razor blades to create slashes and gashes in the liner up to 300 yards long. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated the drainage was also necessary to remove pyrotechnic debris from Independence Day celebrations. However, reports from journalists and on-site observers noted that while peeling surfaces were visible, there was no evidence of large-scale gashes in public-facing areas.
Legal actions have followed, including the felony indictment of former Olympic canoeist David Hearn and charges against three others for destruction of property; all have pleaded not guilty. The administration plans to retain the original contractors, Atlantic Industrial Coatings and Green Water Solutions, despite the project's issues. Democratic lawmakers are currently investigating the use of taxpayer funds and the issuance of no-bid contracts for the renovation.
