Iran Demands Compensation After Ukraine Strikes Cargo Vessel

The Government of Iran is demanding compensation from Ukraine following a deadly strike on the Iranian cargo vessel Anna in the Caspian Sea last month. The attack killed one sailor and was condemned by Tehran as reckless. While Ukraine initially defended the action, officials later characterized the strike as a mistake and stated they do not seek an escalation with Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei rejected the claim that the incident was unintentional. Baghaei warned that Iran will take retaliatory or appropriate steps to ensure payment if compensation is not provided.

President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the strike and praised its results, claiming the vessel was transporting drone and missile components. He argued that Iran had already attacked Ukraine by supplying Shahed drones to Russia. Tehran denies these charges, maintaining that the ship and its cargo were entirely civilian.
