Japan Gains 1.2 Trillion Dollar Inflation Windfall

Economics professor Tsutomu Watanabe estimates Japan gained 195 trillion yen in fiscal room as inflation erodes the real value of government debt.

Economics professor Tsutomu Watanabe estimates that Japan has gained approximately 195 trillion yen ($1.2 trillion) in fiscal room due to an inflation windfall. Speaking at an event hosted by the French bank Natixis in Tokyo on Wednesday, the former Bank of Japan official explained that inflation is eroding the real value of the government's 1,100 trillion yen in outstanding debt.

Watanabe attributed this financial gain to a lag between rising market interest rates and the actual rates the government currently pays on its debt. He suggested that this newfound fiscal capacity could provide Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi with the necessary funding to support her proposed investment and defense plans.
