Nigeria Launches Renewable Energy Projects in Adamawa and Kebbi

The Rural Electrification Agency began constructing 42 renewable energy projects in Adamawa and Kebbi states to provide electricity to tens of thousands of households.

The Rural Electrification Agency has commenced the construction of 42 renewable energy projects across Adamawa and Kebbi states to expand electricity access in underserved communities. These efforts are part of the Renewed Hope Energy initiative and a broader federal program supported by a $750 million World Bank facility approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up program.

In Kebbi State, the agency flagged off a 3.5-megawatt solar power plant in Ambursa. The project is valued at approximately $12 million, consisting of a $6 million government subsidy and a $6 million investment from development partner KELM-Elicoms. The facility will provide electricity to more than 1,500 households and the Ahmadu Bello International Airport, featuring a three-kilometer distribution network and 31 refurbished transformers. Additionally, 15 mini-grids and standalone solar systems will be deployed in Bagudo Local Government Area. This project is expected to be completed within eight months.

In Adamawa State, the initiative includes 39 mini-grids—comprising three interconnected grids in Kofare, Saminaka, and Mbamba, and 36 isolated grids. These projects will provide nearly 27 megawatts of power to approximately 40,000 households, 6,000 small businesses, and over 100 public institutions. Minister of Power Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe stated that these projects align with the national goal of achieving universal electricity access.
