DOJ Targets Democrats Over Alaska Ballot Name Scheme
The United States Department of Justice is investigating Democrats for allegedly recruiting a decoy candidate to siphon votes from Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska.
The United States Department of Justice is investigating allegations that Democratic operatives orchestrated a scheme to confuse voters in the 2026 Alaska U.S. Senate race. The probe focuses on the recruitment of Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher, to run as a candidate with a name nearly identical to incumbent Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan. Federal investigators are examining potential conspiracy and donor fraud, with a federal grand jury in Alaska reviewing the effort to siphon votes toward Democratic candidate Mary Peltola.
On Election Day, the Justice Department sent target letters to approximately 20 Democrats, including elections lawyer Marc Elias and an official from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. This action followed a failed attempt by the department to sue to block the certification of election results if the incumbent lost. Republican critics allege the operation included deceptive mailers from the Alaska Values PAC that featured the decoy candidate while omitting the senator.
President Donald Trump has publicly called for the criminal prosecution of Marc Elias and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, arguing that the ballot phrasing was confusing to voters. Marc Elias has condemned the investigation as a weaponization of the Justice Department against political enemies, asserting there is zero evidence of wrongdoing. The Peltola campaign and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. have denied any coordinated effort to deceive the electorate.
