US European Command Warns Pentagon of Naval Resource Shortages

General Alexus Grynkewich, head of U.S. European Command, privately warned the Pentagon that the United States no longer possesses sufficient naval forces to maintain the protection of Israel against Iranian ballistic missiles. Grynkewich stated that without an additional Navy destroyer, he may be forced to prioritize the defense of the U.S. "homeland" over Israel.

This resource crisis follows five months of conflict with Iran and the collapse of peace talks between Washington and Tehran. The U.S. military is experiencing a severe depletion of advanced interceptors; an analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates the U.S. has exhausted roughly 50% of its Patriot and THAAD interceptors and 45% of its Precision Strike Missiles.

Reports indicate U.S. forces have carried the majority of Israel's missile defense burden, firing more interceptors than the Israeli military. Further straining resources, the Trump administration's blockade of Iranian ports has heavily taxed Navy assets. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has advised that expanding operations against Iran could critically reduce remaining interceptor stocks.
