The 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized President Bola Tinubu for describing hunger in Nigeria as a long-standing issue that existed before his birth. The remarks were made during a meeting between Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Obi characterized the President's comments as insensitive to the plight of millions of citizens facing economic hardship. He claimed that acute food insecurity rose from 17 million to 35 million people since 2023, while extreme poverty increased from 87 million to nearly 140 million.
Obi attributed these declines to insecurity, fiscal indiscipline, and poor economic management. He urged the government to prioritize healthcare, agriculture, and support for small businesses to address the crisis.
