Nigerian Politicians Clash Over Peter Obi's 2027 Election Prospects

Political tensions escalated in Nigeria as officials and commentators clashed over the 2027 presidential prospects of Peter Obi, the candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Minister of Works David Umahi declared in Abuja that Obi cannot win the next election, arguing that increased political education regarding President Bola Tinubu's infrastructure projects in the South-East will erode Obi's support. Umahi urged Igbo leaders to make a strategic decision to support Tinubu's second-term bid to ensure future reciprocity for the region.

Conversely, businessman Isaac Fayose challenged claims by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike that President Tinubu would easily win the Federal Capital Territory. Fayose asserted that Obi will win the FCT, citing widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling All Progressives Congress and claiming the NDC has strategies to prevent result manipulation.

In Owerri, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie criticized the political attacks against Obi, specifically calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Minister Umahi to stop attempting to discredit Obi's record. Awuzie urged the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to intervene, characterizing Obi as the type of leader Nigeria currently requires.

Parallel to these political disputes, Minister Umahi detailed a funding model for legacy road projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, where the federal government provides 30 percent of costs and the remainder is sourced from foreign loans repayable through tolling. He also condemned the vandalism of road materials and manhole covers on these projects.
