Qatar Coordinates Diplomacy Following U.S.-Iran Ceasefire
Qatar's leadership held high-level talks with France, Portugal, and Lebanon to stabilize global energy markets and maritime security following a U.S.-Iran ceasefire.
The government of Qatar initiated a series of high-level diplomatic consultations across April 8 and 9, 2026, to address regional instability and the economic impacts of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani first consulted with French President Emmanuel Macron to evaluate how the truce affects international maritime traffic and global energy markets, with both leaders calling for a comprehensive agreement to ensure a permanent ceasefire.
On April 9, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani welcomed the ceasefire in a call with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel. He urged immediate action to build upon the agreement to prevent further escalation, specifically stressing the need to secure maritime passages and maintain international trade under international law to protect global supply chains.
Simultaneously, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani contacted Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss the security situation in Lebanon. The Emir condemned recent Israeli airstrikes, rejecting any violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Qatar's support for the Lebanese people and expressed readiness to provide assistance and contribute to regional de-escalation efforts.
