Trump Demands Rate Cuts as Wells Fargo CEO Defends Fed

President Donald Trump has demanded immediate interest rate cuts and attempted to fire a Federal Reserve governor, prompting calls for central bank independence.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly demanded that the Federal Reserve lower benchmark interest rates, which have remained unchanged since December 2024. Trump has publicly criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, nicknamed him "Too Late," and insisted that the central bank must lower rates immediately.

Tensions between the administration and the Federal Reserve escalated in August when Trump attempted to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook. The move followed mortgage fraud accusations leveled against Cook by housing finance chief Bill Pulte, though a judge blocked the dismissal on Tuesday.

In response to the friction, Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf stated that while the president is entitled to be vocal about monetary policy, the Federal Reserve must remain independent. Markets currently expect a rate cut at the September meeting, driven by a weakening labor market and lower inflation data.
