South Africa Sets Local Government Elections for November 4

The Electoral Commission of South Africa launched its 2026 electoral programme as President Cyril Ramaphosa officially scheduled local government elections for November 4.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) launched its 2026 electoral programme on May 27 in Midrand under the tagline “Get Up, Show Up, Vote.” Cyril Ramaphosa officially proclaimed November 4, 2026, as the date for Local Government Elections, maintaining the constitutional five-year interval since the 2021 municipal polls.

The IEC is focusing on combating declining voter turnout, especially among youth affected by unemployment and poor service delivery. To increase participation, the commission strengthened its online registration portal, which added 376,000 new voters between January and May, bringing the total to 27.9 million. An in-person voter registration weekend is scheduled for June 20 and 21.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo warned that social media disinformation threatens information integrity. In response, the IEC will publish a draft code of conduct on misinformation and intensify collaboration with civil society through the Real411 platform.

The commission faces pressure from political parties, including the MK party and the Economic Freedom Fighters, which have made unsubstantiated claims of vote rigging in the 2024 elections. Commissioner Janet Love warned that these attacks erode public confidence. A recent IEC survey found that trust in the commission is lowest in KwaZulu-Natal at 20%, and support for democracy as the preferred system is no longer the majority view in any province.
