Trump Orders ICE to Continue Traffic Stops Amid Record Arrests

President Donald Trump has intensified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, resulting in a record 51,000 arrests in July. Under the direction of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, federal agents expanded tactics to include checkpoints in public recreation areas, such as Wilson Creek in North Carolina, and the targeting of passengers with expired visas at airports. Despite the surge, the administration has not yet reached its goal of 2,000 arrests per day.

The crackdown has been marked by violence, including fatal shootings of individuals by federal agents in Minnesota, Texas, and Maine, as well as the death of a man in Florida. In response to these fatalities, the Department of Homeland Security briefly suspended vehicle stops. However, Trump publicly opposed the suspension, insisting that traffic stops remain a primary tool for the agency. He subsequently ordered the continuation of these stops but mandated that ICE officers wear body cameras during the operations.

The administration's approach has sparked significant public outcry and political risk ahead of the midterm elections. Critics and legal experts argue that agents are detaining non-criminals in legal gray areas rather than high-priority targets. Polling indicates a decline in public support, with a majority of adults expressing disapproval or a lack of confidence in ICE.
