Brazil Seeks International Pix Integration Amid U.S. Tariffs

The Central Bank of Brazil is pursuing cross-border integration for its Pix payment system after the U.S. imposed 25% tariffs on Brazilian imports.

The Central Bank of Brazil is assessing the integration of its instant payment system, Pix, with international platforms to reduce costs and accelerate cross-border transactions. This initiative follows a July trade investigation by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which characterized Pix as an unfair practice because the central bank serves as both the operator and the regulator of the system.

The United States government used the investigation's findings to justify the imposition of 25% tariffs on Brazilian imports. In response, the central bank has defended Pix as critical public digital infrastructure. To expand the system's reach, the bank has signed information-sharing agreements with 65 foreign counterparts, including Canada, Germany, South Africa, and Turkey.

Launched in 2020, Pix has significantly reduced the market share of global card networks such as Visa and Mastercard. The system's growth has been rapid, with transaction volumes reaching nearly 80 billion in 2025.
