Shomari Figures Wins Reelection in Alabama's 2nd District
Democratic incumbent Shomari Figures defeated Republican Rhett Marques to retain his seat in Alabama's 2nd Congressional District despite Republican-led redistricting efforts.
Democratic incumbent Shomari Figures won reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating Republican challenger Rhett Marques. The Associated Press declared Figures the winner at 11:00 p.m. EST.
Figures secured a second term despite a special legislative session by the Government of Alabama that redrew the district's boundaries to be more Republican-friendly. The new map confined the district to much of southeastern Alabama, discarding a 2024 court-drawn map that had previously protected Black voter impact under the Voting Rights Act.
This redistricting was part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump to maintain a slim Republican House majority. The process was facilitated by a Supreme Court of the United States decision in April that weakened portions of the Voting Rights Act, allowing the state legislature to implement the boundary changes. Figures, an attorney and former Obama administration staffer, overcame these demographic shifts to defeat Marques, a longtime state legislator and auto service business owner.
