Pakistan Fuel and Food Prices Surge 26 Percent
The Government of Pakistan faces protests as fuel prices rise 26 percent and essential commodity costs increase, impacting low-income households and the transgender community.
The Government of Pakistan is facing mounting pressure as the cost of living surges across the country. Petrol and high-speed diesel prices rose by approximately 26 percent between July 1 and October 24, 2026, while the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics reported a 5.81 percent increase in the price index for 51 essential commodities during the same period.
These price hikes have triggered a ripple effect, increasing transport fares and the cost of basic staples like roti. In Karachi, low- and middle-income households report struggling to afford basic meals. The economic strain has led to public unrest, including protests by the transgender community outside the Karachi Press Club in July.
Protesters and citizens have accused the administration of Shehbaz Sharif of failing to curb profiteering or provide relief to vulnerable populations. Zehrish Somroo, representing the Gender Alliance Interactive, warned that the rising cost of living has deeply affected the transgender community. Demonstrators have demanded immediate government intervention to reduce fuel and commodity prices, warning that continued inaction will lead to larger demonstrations.
