Diamond Centre Denies Bribery Claims Over Trump Gift

The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) has denied allegations that a diamond-encrusted gold ring gifted to U.S. President Donald Trump was intended to secure a tariff exemption for the European diamond industry. The ring, which contains 321 diamonds, was presented on June 28 during a celebration for the 250th anniversary of American independence organized by the U.S. Embassy in Belgium.

On July 24, the Trump administration exempted European natural diamonds from Section 301 tariffs, restoring a 0% tariff rate. This sequence of events led two Democratic senators to question if the gift violates federal bribery laws, suggesting potential criminal penalties for the AWDC and David Gotlib Luxury Cufflinks.

The AWDC maintains the gift was tied solely to the independence celebrations and was entirely separate from trade discussions. The White House stated the tariff exemption merely upheld a previous U.S.-European Union trade agreement signed in Scotland, denying that any favors were granted to special interests.
