Mark Esper Warns US-Iran War Distracts From China
Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper warns that the prolonged war with Iran allows China to expand its global power unchecked.
Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper warned at the GZERO Summit in London that the eight-month war between the United States and Iran could persist into 2027 or even 2029. Esper described the conflict as an impasse, arguing that while the economic strangulation of Iran is a valid policy, Washington lacks the patience required for such a strategy to succeed.
President Donald Trump has intensified this pressure through a strategy called Economic D-Day. Trump has expressed a reluctance to reach a diplomatic deal with Tehran, stating that doing so "isn't really something that I want to do."
Esper cautioned that this prolonged focus on the Middle East creates a strategic opening for China. He argued that Beijing is executing a long-term plan to dominate global governance and the Indo-Pacific region by 2049, building military and technological power while the United States remains preoccupied with Iran.
