China Deploys Military Near Taiwan and Faces Japan Standoff

China deployed naval and air assets around Taiwan and engaged in a maritime standoff with Japan over the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands on July 7, 2026.

The Government of China escalated regional tensions on July 7, 2026, through simultaneous military activity near Taiwan and a maritime confrontation with Japan. In Taiwan, the Ministry of National Defence detected four Chinese aircraft sorties, nine naval vessels, and three official ships. Three of the aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan's southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone, following similar activity reported on July 6.

Simultaneously, the China Coast Guard and Japan Coast Guard engaged in a standoff near the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. Conflicting reports emerged regarding a Japanese fishing vessel, the Zuihou Maru. Chinese officials claimed they expelled the boat for illegally entering territorial waters off Chiwei Yu, while Japan reported it expelled two Chinese ships that had approached the vessel. Japan characterized the Chinese activity as a violation of international law.

These incidents follow a period of strained diplomacy. Beijing recently urged the United States to handle Taiwan-related issues with prudence and imposed trade restrictions on Japanese firms. The latter resulted from November 2025 remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked. In response to the July 7 standoff, the Japan Coast Guard vowed to take all possible measures to ensure the security of its territorial waters.
