Ed Miliband Reveals Suppressed UK Report on Climate Security

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband presented findings from a suppressed national security report to foreign ministers from the European Union, Kenya, and other nations during a private meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York. The report, authored by the Joint Intelligence Committee, warns that the collapse of global natural systems and an intense El Niño event threaten global food and water security, which increases the risk of conflict and migration.

Although the report was scheduled for publication in October 2025, Downing Street suppressed the full document, releasing only a redacted version in January. Prime Minister Andy Burnham backed the decision to present the research to international partners during the current assembly.

To address these risks, Miliband announced the appointment of a new special representative for climate security and the creation of a ministerial taskforce focused on climate and nature loss. Additionally, the United Kingdom is providing £330 million in funding to the Global Environment Facility to protect critical ecosystems, including forests and oceans, in developing countries.
