U.S. Becomes Top Oil Exporter as Iran Blockades Strait of Hormuz

The United States became the world's top crude exporter as an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz sparked global fuel shortages and soaring prices.

The United States has overtaken Saudi Arabia as the world's top crude oil exporter following a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. The disruption, stemming from a two-month war involving the U.S. and Israel, has cut off approximately 20% of global oil supplies, including exports from Saudi Arabia and Iraq. In response, U.S. exports surged 30% to a record 5.2 million barrels per day in April, with the Port of Corpus Christi emerging as a primary global supplier.

Despite these export gains, the surge has depleted domestic inventories by 52 million barrels over four weeks, driving U.S. retail petrol prices above $4.40 per gallon. In California, the situation is more acute; officials warn the state has only four to six weeks of fuel reserves remaining. This vulnerability is exacerbated by a recent 18% drop in state refining capacity due to refinery closures. The Port of Long Beach recently received the last scheduled shipment of Gulf crude, marking a critical inflection point for domestic supply.

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth warned that the global economy faces physical oil shortages comparable to the 1970s, predicting economic contraction starting in Asia and Europe. The crisis has already led to the collapse of Spirit Airlines due to skyrocketing jet fuel costs. While President Donald Trump maintains that energy prices will plummet once traffic in the Strait of Hormuz normalizes, recent ceasefire negotiations have collapsed, and public polls show nearly two-thirds of Americans blame the president for the crisis.
