CARICOM Backs India for UN Security Council Seat

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) announced its support for India's candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-29 term. The decision was reached during an India-CARICOM Foreign Ministers' Meeting on September 23 in New York, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Co-chaired by India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Suriname's Minister of Foreign Affairs Melvin W. J. Bouva, the meeting focused on expanding political engagement and economic ties. The two parties agreed to increase cooperation in agriculture, food security, digital governance, energy, and climate resilience.

This diplomatic engagement follows the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Guyana in November 2024. Economic ties between the regions are already established, with bilateral trade reaching USD 986.86 million in 2023-24. India's exports to the region primarily consist of electronics and pharmaceuticals, while its imports are dominated by mineral fuels and oils.
