British Broadcasting Corporation Seeks Subpoenas for Trump Family

The British Broadcasting Corporation is seeking to subpoena Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner as part of a $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump. The legal battle stems from a 2024 documentary that edited Trump's January 6, 2021, speech to suggest he endorsed violence. While the broadcaster apologized for the editing, it denies the documentary provides grounds for a lawsuit and argues that the Trump family members possess personal knowledge of the president's intentions during the speech.

Efforts to serve the subpoenas in Miami and New York were blocked by police and the United States Secret Service. In response, the British Broadcasting Corporation has requested court authorization to serve the documents by mail or through the president's attorneys. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett has already ruled that the subpoenas are sufficiently connected to the allegations.

In a separate development, U.S. District Judge Roy K. Altman allowed Donald Trump to narrow the lawsuit to focus exclusively on his personal reputation, removing claims that the documentary harmed his businesses. This amendment reduces the potential scope of damages and may limit the British Broadcasting Corporation's ability to obtain financial records from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, though the discovery dispute remains ongoing.
