U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman and former state representative James Byrd won their respective party nominations in Wyoming's U.S. Senate primary on August 19, 2026. Hageman secured the Republican nomination with 62.7% of the vote, defeating runner-up Sam Mead and three other candidates. James Byrd won the Democratic primary in a landslide, taking 78% of the vote to defeat Billy Benavidez.
The Senate seat became available after Senator Cynthia Lummis announced she would not seek re-election, stating she did "not have six more years" in her. Hageman entered the race with the "complete and total endorsement" of Donald Trump, who praised her as a "TOTAL WINNER." Byrd ran a moderate campaign focused on public lands and rural healthcare, while Hageman emphasized domestic energy and immigration enforcement.
Other key primary results showed State Senator Eric Barlow winning the Republican nomination for governor, defeating Trump-endorsed Superintendent Megan Degenfelder. Additionally, Secretary of State Chuck Gray won the Republican primary for the U.S. House seat with 25% of the vote. This election cycle is the first in 32 years that Wyoming has simultaneous open seats for governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House.
