John James Wins Michigan Republican Gubernatorial Primary

U.S. Representative John James won the Republican primary for governor of Michigan on August 5, 2026. An Army veteran and ally of Donald Trump, James secured the nomination despite being significantly outspent by his primary opponent, businessman Perry Johnson. While Johnson invested over $31 million of his own funds into advertising, James spent $2.8 million.

Leading up to the vote, the candidates took diverging strategies. On August 3, Johnson held a rally in Novi, arguing his financial resources made him the only candidate capable of defeating Democrat Jocelyn Benson. Meanwhile, James hosted a Primary Eve Party in Harrison Township, focusing on voter turnout and the need to prevent socialists from influencing the nation.

James' victory was bolstered by the endorsement of Donald Trump and the July withdrawal of former state Attorney General Mike Cox, who endorsed James. He campaigned on a platform of improving public safety, increasing school funding accountability, and repealing the state income tax.

James will now face Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the general election this fall. Current Governor Gretchen Whitmer is ineligible for re-election due to term limits. James' move to the gubernatorial race leaves his 10th congressional district seat vacant.
