India Conducts Red Fort Rehearsal for 80th Independence Day

Authorities in New Delhi conducted a full-dress rehearsal on August 13 at the Red Fort to test security, traffic management, and personnel movement for India's 80th Independence Day celebrations. The rehearsal prepared for the August 15 event where Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag, receive a 21-gun salute, and address the nation from the fort's ramparts.

To secure the capital, the Delhi Traffic Police restricted commercial vehicle entry starting August 12 and implemented route diversions in coordination with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Security forces deployed temporary pickets and increased patrolling in sensitive areas, including the Shahdara district and the Yamuna River banks. The Delhi Police will also utilize drone surveillance for the main event.

The 2026 celebrations center on the themes "150 Years of Vande Mataram" and "Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047". For the first time, the national song Vande Mataram will be performed at the Red Fort, and an Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will shower flower petals over the crowd. Approximately 27,000 guests, including 5,000 special invitees and 2,500 volunteers from the National Cadet Corps and My Bharat, are expected to attend. Logistics include free metro services starting at 4 AM and the distribution of rain ponchos, as umbrellas are prohibited for security reasons.
