Poll Shows Most Albertans Oppose Separation from Canada

An Angus Reid Institute poll reveals significant public opposition to Alberta separating from Canada and indicates that a majority of residents would relocate if independence occurred. Among the 63% of respondents opposed to separation, 77% said they would move, and three-quarters of that group plan to relocate to another Canadian province.

Only 8% of respondents stated they would definitely vote to leave Canada, while 57% would definitely vote to stay. The data suggests a gap between public opinion and the position of Premier Danielle Smith. Approximately 54% of the general public disapproves of how Smith has handled the separation issue, and she holds a net approval rating of minus 17 on the topic.

In contrast, Prime Minister Mark Carney is viewed by Albertans as handling the issue more effectively than Smith. While voters within the United Conservative Party show higher levels of support for leaving Confederation than the general public, the overall consensus remains firmly against independence.
